Fairbanks North Star Borough is located in the center of Alaska and is one of the most populous areas in the state. Native Alaskan students comprise approximately 10 percent of the area’s population and about 8 percent of the students are English language learners (ELL). The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District encompasses an area of 7,361 square miles which is roughly the size of Rhode Island, Delaware and Connecticut combined. The school district is required to communicate with a diverse group of students and parents in their own languages - over 40 in fact.
